Hi, this is Matt from Orvis Technical, I noticed no one had answered your question but the line guides are mounted on the spline, not opposite it. That is the method that we use on all of our rods.

I started to use it with a LA Battenkill III reel, now switched to the LA Battenkill II, the larger reel allows for more backing the smaller one is also balancing fine, both are great with this rod. Any reel in the normal weight range, you like will be perfect.
